According to traditional belief, peach blossoms symbolize luck and kumquat trees represent peace and calm.
Traditional flower markets in Hanoi such as Quang Ba, Quang An and Hang Luoc were crowded with buyers. Every buyer carefully selected peach flower branches and bouquets to welcome the Lunar New Year.

Quang Ba flower market in Hanoi
Going to the market by night has become a culture, an identity of Hanoians. The biggest flower market in Hanoi now is in Quang Ba area.
Quang Ba flower market (in Tay Ho district) is open every day from early in the morning until midnight, it is considered the market where widest variety of flowers are bought and sold by Hanoians.
Flowers at Quang Ba market are regarded as the most beautiful and freshest of all. They come from many places, such as Quang Ba, Nghi Tam, Nhat Tan and Dam-Cau Dien, and from areas farther afield like Dong Anh, Soc Son, Me Linh or much farther areas like Sapa in the Northern mountainous region or Da Lat in Central Highlands.
Three flower markets in Hanoi Quang Ba market becomes more crowded and busier than ever on the yearly Tet Holiday. Beside the regular customers including flower shop owners in Hanoi, many unexpected visitors, mostly young people, go there to enjoy the Tet atmosphere through the cheerful colours of flowers.
Subsequently, the end of the flower trade in Ngoc Ha has helped several other flower villages on the outskirts of Hanoi to flourish. They are Kim Chung, Van Tri and Uy No in Dong Anh district, Tay Tuu and Dai Mo in Tu Liem district, Dong Du, Bac Bien and Yen Vien in Gia Lam district.
Hang Luoc – Hanoi’s oldest Tet flower market
Founded in the 1920s, the Hang Luoc flower market is located on Hang Luoc street and extends down nearby alleys.
This market only appears from 23rd to the 30th of the 12th lunar month. In the past, it only sold flowers for Tet, but nowadays, flowers are just one of various items offered at Hang Luoc flower market.
Each year, on the 23rdday of lunar December, Hang Luoc Street is turned into aflower market for Tet. Sellers bring in peach, kumquat, and apricot trees, roses, sunflowers, carnations and amplexicaul tea from the flower villages on the edge of the city.
Visitors can choose their favourite flowers and enjoy the beauty of all kinds of flowers, while meeting to talk. Visiting the flower market is a special part of culture for every Hanoian.
Nghi Tam flower market
The Nghi Tam flower market in Hanoi’s Tay Ho district is considered the centre of flower market in the capital city. As the traditional lunar New Year festival is drawing near, the market is more crowded than ever.
Nghi Tam village is one of three ancient village of Quang An ward, formed in 1138 when Tu Hoa Princess and King Ly Than Tong moved to the village to teach the people to grow mulberry and raise silkworms. Initially, the village was named Tam Tang farm. Under the Tran Dynasty, the farm was renamed Tich Ma ward. During the Le Dynasty, the ward renamed Nghi Tam.
Nghi Tam has been a flower village since the establishment of the capital. The village has developed continuously, and has always been considered one of the largest flower villages, supplying fresh flowers for the city and its vicinity.
There are many kinds of flowers originating from temperate regions like the peach blossom, daisy, violet and lily, and particularly the kumquat, peach and white apricot. From winter to spring, with the drizzling rain and the cold wind, the temperature is suitable for the growth of these flowers. Every morning, Nghi Tam flower market is busy.
