DOG GOES TO SWEDEN

Our border colie LIA is excited about driving in the car, meeting new friends and doing TRICKS. We are going to visit an on line canine friends in Sweden this summer ...and learn what to expect when travel with a dog LIA. (on FB)..It is time to pack some DOG EQUIPMENT, and quality DOG FOOD .  We also found a great CAMERA BACKPACK,
which is an inovative combination of camera bag and daily backpack. There is plenty of room for cameras and Lias snacks...

Coffe and food breaks are going to be held in those handful  RESTAURANTS

We planned our trip with helpful guide books LONELY PLANET
Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway.

Our TRAVEL EXPERIENCE.
and newest family member border collie Tewi

We made maximum 500 km per day which took us up to 8 hours with some rest stops and only once we were trapped for 3 hours in a traffic jam. While on the German motorways we usually stoped at Marche restaurants. You always know what to expect , the prices are economical, food tastefull, looks fresh and healthy... And we could enter the restaurant with Lia – at least to the garden which is always part of those restaurants.

We even found one in Leipzig ZOO – nice surprise as they also serve Asian food and the restaurant looks like a colonial building from Indonesia.
On the way to Sweden we drove over spectacular bridges – worth a bit longer trip although the crossing costs similar as the ferry ride. Part of the Oresund crossing is made with a tunnel under the sea. There is kind of border check on the Swedish side but there were no delays or long lines in the middle of the summer season.

Long ride to the Swedish mountains which are looking more like hills ended in Idre Fjall. A modern ski resort is also a dog paradise – Lia attended a traditional meeting with obidience course. There were at least 50 dogs around. Big tourist village consist of different wooden houses and a small hotel named after famous skier Pernilla Wiberg

A few km away lies Idre – nice village by the river and lake with some temptive sandy beaches. There are some shops, tourist info, church, petrol station, library, restaurants, B&B's, campings... Lots of walking trails around the forests, with blueberryes and other wild fruits.  Also the place to visit the highest waterfall in Sweden.
Near the border with Norway looks like a real Swedish wild west - horses, wild animals, big american cars, country music, wooden houses...

Goteborg – two days stop in one of the most attractive Swedish towns was also special because we were couchsurfing with a friendly family- Katarina, Alma in a tipical wooden house - thanks again! Even the new house member terier Car friendly excepted as. With some barking at first but later they became friends with Lia. Green  town is full of parks. And there are lots of small islands around. Nice for a visit with a short picturesque ferry ride. We also used trams to move around – most convenient for Lia. She got a lot of attention, specialy in the parks while performing some dog trics... Goteborg City card helped us to save some money as we travelled a lot around the town and visited many attractions.

We found an attractive coast - bit to cold for swim (ok for Lia) but with some nice villages. Smogen was the most picturesque!

Short visit of Norway - from Lillehammer to Oslo and old town Fredrikstad. Couchsurfing at Ellen's beautiful white house was a memorable experience. Even if Lia didn't like her cat much! So she had to sleep in a garden house. Traffic on Norwegen roads runs smooth but slowly due to speed limits. The road from Lillehammer to Oslo is picturesque. We enjoyed even the road stop with unique red toilets which looked like a Star treck houses.

LEGOLAND- nice for Lego funs, with lots of interesting buildings, flowers, attractions.... Just to crowded on sunny days. Lines are big and you have to wait an hour or so for the ride- good thing-dogs have a free entrance....

EGESKOV castle is on of the must visit places on Fyn island. We spend a lovely day in the manicured castle gardens, did some tree walks and admired castle exibitions including old dresses, cars, bicycles... Missed segway experience this time. There is also free camping place for the visitors with showers and toilets. Just next to the fairy tale looking danish houses.

Almost every stop in Denmark was awarded with a visit of picturesque old part of town. We also »met« H.C.Andersen and saw his birth house.
There used to be a traffic light with his silhuette but we didn't find it.

Flensburg, old port city just across the border with Germany was a nice surprice. Looks like Denmark but the prices are German... Nice long pedestrian street and picturesque port .We stayed in HOSTEL which is some 3 km from the old center, but has got lots of walking paths in the nearby forest - perfect for a dog or nature lovers.

Nice to see the Baltic sea - after driving across the Germany. Water is cold but not for lia and locals.... We've found great accommodation in hostel BAD MALENTE - dogs welcome! Idilic location at the lake, room vith a view, good food, lots of walking trails in the nature. As we were late atenative personal saved diner for us and served it in the common room, which could be entered with a dog. We had a room with a lake view and sharing garden. Baltic sea with long sandy beaches is just some 15 km away. On some of the wilder beaches dogs can run around freely. Lia had the first bath after some days on the road. The water had probably around 18 degrees C – enough for the locals but far to cold for me.

Stops in Germany - medieval towns along Danube river - Regensburg is a pearl- We found attractive cup-cake shop near the cathedral - nyammy. And survived some 6 hours in the car.   Leipzig - another big town, much changed sice the East Germany times. Big city center with lots of renovated old buildings, attractive dining possibilities, lots of cultural events, attractive ZOO with a real tropical jungle... some tree walks, monkeys, birds, slots just a few steps away... Unfortunately Lia was not alowed to enter. We managed to visit a modern galery all togeather although Lia didn't show any interest for the sculptures (Michelangelo's David) and paintings.
Lübeck was a nice medieval surprise near the Baltic sea. Lots of attractive buildings, picturesque river and sweet temptations in the form of marzipan! Just have to try marzipan ice cream!

Lake Mohnesee is famous for a big old dam badl dameged during the 2nd World war. Great to stop for a day or two. HOSTEL is just a few stops from the lake - nice, comfortable rooms, good food (German standards), new building and furniture...not to mention, dogs welcome! Wurzburg, another picturesque medieval town with old stone bridge which looks like Charles bridge in Prague. We have found HOSTEL in an old building just below mighty castle. Used to be a womens prison, but now welcomes traveler souls. Great location just a few steps from the old town center and stone bridge.  Innsbruck - nice but rainy stop in Austria. Lots to do in an Olympic city. Visti of the ski jump Bergisl is a must! As well as taking a long walk around the old part of town, HOSTEL was the most economical optiaon again. Dog friendly with a walking paths along the river just behind the building. It lies some km from the city center but easy to move around with a bus.

Lakes around SALZBURG - some partly rainy walks, but in Salzuburg - rain again. Still we did some walks, climb to the castle with a funicular, found some Mozart sweets, took a quick tour of popular spots and had a ride with a tram. We spent the night in a HOSTEL on Aigner strasse - some 15 minutes walk from the old part of town, or in need, there is bus nr. 7 passing by..
Hostel is located in a green and peaceful part of town, surrounded with big park. We had a comfortable room with bathroom in an old building. As we visited some museums and attractions around the city, we had a good deal with the SALZBURG CARD (free entrance, public transport...)

-LINZ. Rainy but charming old part of town full of shops (also for dogs - Feine Pfote) and restaurants beside historical buildings. Some interesting modern structures along Danube river with attractive lights.
If you plan to visit some museums it is smart to buy LINZ CARD - free entrances, also free public transport..... Ars Electronica Center was the best - good for small and big electronic enthusiasts (the pink building behind Lia-she had to stay outside....). There are a lot of green parts along Danube, some parks and small hills in the city - so really dog friendly. At some of them dogs can run free around (freilaufflache). U like sweets ? - Linzer cake is a good option. Old recipe - jam, almonds, nice looking...
